In the 1982/1983 season, Widzew Łódź reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup, marking one of the club's most significant moments in history. The team, managed by coach Zdzisław Kręcina, surprised many opponents, showcasing their strength and determination on the international stage.
In the first round, the Czerwono-Biało-Czerwoni faced Union Luxembourg from Luxembourg. After an easy victory of 5:1 in the first leg, Widzew also won the return match 3:0, allowing them to continue their adventure in European competitions. However, these successes were just a prelude to what was to follow in the next rounds.
In the second round, Widzew encountered Belgian side KAA Gent. After a tight match, they managed to secure a 2:2 draw away, and in the return leg held in Łódź, the team showcased their full potential, winning 4:0.
A true test for Widzew came in the quarter-finals against Italian giants Lazio. After a fierce battle, Widzew advanced on away goals, confirming that they could compete with the best.
Unfortunately, in the semifinals, the Czerwono-Biało-Czerwoni faced the renowned Hamburger SV, one of the top teams in Europe at the time. Despite the defeat, Widzew captured the hearts of fans not only in Poland but around the world, demonstrating that Polish football had much to offer on the international scene.
